WATERSIDE FOOTBALL CLUB
|
Waterside's association with local football has endured for well over 100 years,
which probably makes it the longest operating local football club, and is
just 2 years short from the formation of the league itself. The Club
operates one team playing on ?..days.
The club was formed in 1897 and entered the league the following year under
the name of Waterside Works, a factory unit owned by Ransomes and Rapier.
The club became one of the most successful in the league after the Second World War,
winning the senior division of the IDL from 1950 to 1964 no less than 8 times.
The club's association with Pauls began in 1984, upon merging with Cranfield Brothers
football club, who already operated from the site. With the closure of Cranfield's,
the club's name reverted back to Waterside FC.
The club is extremely grateful for the superb facilities at Pauls, which are certainly
a big improvement on the frustrations the club endured in the early 80's when it
had no fixed home.
